Essay

Introduction

In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting in which ways ‘This is England’ promotes the film using posters and a website, also the budget of the film and profit they made.
A film that has been successful is ‘Avengers Assemble’(2012), which is rated 8.6 stars by IMDb, in ‘Avenger Assemble’ all the superheroes form an team (Hulk, Ironman, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black widow) , to fight evil (Loki and his army). The Profit of the film is $1,307,807,000 or £835,350,849, this film was so successful because this film contained all the successful characters and has been promoted though Hulk, Captain American, Thor and Ironman.
A Film that has been failure is ‘The Disaster Movie ‘which was rate 1.8 stars by IMDb, and the budget was $25,000,000 and the profit was $34,816,824. This movie story line is, over the course of one evening, an unsuspecting group of twenty-something finds them bombarded by a series of natural disasters and catastrophic events. This movie was a fail because, the acting was horrible, the plot was pointless and the setting was all wrong.

Section One

‘This is England’ budget was £1,500,000 (estimated) and the profit they made was £5,000,000(worldwide), This is England advertised there film by posters and a website (which everyone over the world can access. Also the movie was rated 7.8 stars by IMDb, also so it won 9 film awards and had 14 nominations. The plot was, a story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school after a fight. They become his new best friends even like his family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows. On the film poster you can tell that this is a low budget film because of the clothes which are ripped with jagged edges which signifies that they could have been in fights where clothes have got ripped and have been you lots before (charity shop),, also the boots they are wearing could signify they do a lot of walking over different terrains or are used to hurt people (kick), the area they are in which are by flats and a rundown area, but they look calm and this signifies that they could be down an alleyway that they can’t get caught in by the police or meet other gangs there. Also the characters are not well known which signifies that it is a low budget movie.. Also if you use famous actors on the website would want people going to see the movie more, for example Tom Cruise always makes a good movie (Knight and Day, Mission Impossible and Top Gun etc…) so this would attract attention. The institution have include awarded, which they have won 9 awards and had 14 nominations, also some quotes which are, Radio One- Edith Bowman “INCREDIBLE POWERFUL”, also Glamour “RAW AND REMARKABLE”. These quotes, reviews and awards would boost the popularity of seeing the movie because if a magazine you like and they advertise and quote on it will make the person want to see it. The Institution have made a trailer that is on the home screen of the website to give a quick clip of the movie to show parts of interesting bits from the movie, which is made to attract people. Also they have made pictures you can download to your computer to have on your phone or your home screen on your computer, and you can shares this via internet. This would all contribute to the population increase by advertisement and making people know about the film.

Section Three

The costumes they wear look very rough because of the holes, jagged edges, rips and some are wearing Amy trousers which shows that is the style or is there to look tough. The location of the film is an estate with lots of flats which look run down, which suggest it is a poor area to live in, and people expectation are low because it suggest it is a low budget film. The font is big, wide, bold, and stands out, this signifies that the film is bold so it gets its points across to you and you will remember the film because it is big, wide and it stands out. The colours are Red, White and Blue which are the British flag colours, which signifies that this movie is going to be biased towards Britain, and at the time British people where a little bit racist towards foreigners. The facial expression is very angry and tough, maybe looking for another gang to fight with, this signifies that there clothes are ripped because they have got into fights.

Conclusion

My conclusion is that, to promote a film you should you the combination of a film poster and web site, but in the ‘This is England’ poster is better because it give the audience more information about what the people wear, what people look like and it is more bold, but the web site doesn’t give much away and doesn't show the characters, but shows where they live and both have what awards they have won. In this poster it looks like a stereotype because it says to me that all skinheads (bald heads) are in gangs and dress up it fighting clothes, and hang around in estates areas.

Analyse of 'This Is England'

1. Clothes and Props
  • The clothes and props are very outstanding because the cloths are very strong colours like army clothes and have ripped holes and jagged edges, which suggest that they are in gangs that often have fights or it is just a look to look scary. Also they have very big strong boots, which suggest they do a lot of walking on different terrains, or it is a look, or even to hurt people with.
2. Body Language
  • The Body language is very calm, but weary, also it looks like they don't care if about the surroundings (e.g vandalism against the metal wall) and there looks like a bit of graffiti against the metal wall they have done and are covering up so if police go past they won't get caught. They are all very close together which suggest that they are trying to be intimidating, or are very good friends.

3.Facial
  • The facial expression is very tough and angry, maybe looking for another gang to fight with and are trying to look badman.

4. Colors
  • There colours are very dull and are trying to blending with the surroundings to look normal, and maybe they are not normal, and are trying to blend in with other people. Or are trying to hid from someone that wants to hurt them or wants something. Also the colours Red, White and Blue suggest that they are proud to be British, and at the time people didn't like foreigner so it could be a little bit racist.

5. Location they are in
  • The location looks like a estate with lots of flats behind them that look run down, which suggest they could be having a bad time at home, also they are very relax which suggest it is very quiet and could be do an big alleyway where gangs hang out so they can't be spotted easily.

6. What they are doing
    • They are casually standing looking for something or someone important or trying to hid. or they are just talking to each other.

7) The features of the film poster and the web site that suggest that it falls into the gang crime genre, because one scene is two gangs fighting, and they do graffiti on the walls, also they have shaved heads which in the 80's was fashion, then it was a symbol showing that you are strong powerful and wants a fight and they were called 'Skinheads', also they where military boots and clothing and leather jackets which suggest they are not scared of anyone and want a fight, and finally the colors are the union jack flag colors are around the screen (Red, White and Blue) which suggest they are proud of there country and might not like anyone else that come from a different country.

8) By looking at the poster and the web site I know that the target audience is men and women teenagers because in the film poster there are a mixture of men and women, and this movie would be niche ( a small minority of people), because most teens would see movies with special effects, and this movie hasn't got any special effects.

9) I can tell that the people on the poster and web site are involved in vandalism and and crime because in the poster they are casually leaning against a metal wall, and there is a bit of graffiti of the metal wall, which is vandalism so that is crime. Also what they are wearing is big boots, army clothes which suggest they what a fight and they fight.
